VISION
New York Resilient Electric GRID by Design (NY-REGRIDD) will create a stakeholder-directed, community-engaged innovation ecosystem to develop, de-risk, and scale the technologies needed to enable a fully renewable, equitable, and resilient electric grid. It will develop the highly skilled and diverse energy technology workforce required to design, develop, and sustain it and unleash billions in utility and infrastructure investments to create the 21st-century, renewable electric grid. The geographical region of service impacted by NY-REGRIDD spans dense urban to suburban to rural farmland with over 1,600 miles of coastal exposure, making it particularly susceptible to climate change while also serving as an entry point for all NYS offshore wind energy development. The region includes seven counties in lower metropolitan New York, namely the five boroughs of NYC (Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island) and the two counties of Long Island (Nassau, Suffolk). Severe socioeconomic disparities concentrated in this densely populated region identify an opportunity for this Engine to have significant economic and societal impact.
The NY-REGRIDD will focus on the technical, workforce, and community challenges of reaching a 100% renewable grid. There will be a continuous need for innovation as the system continues to evolve with new power sources, changing demand, further electrification, and as-yet-unknown challenges and opportunities. The infrastructure, methods, and protocols established by NY-REGRIDD will enable continuous evaluation of challenges and innovative solutions well beyond those known today.
